Film Critic Slams Most Of Hollywood

Film Critic Slams Most Of Hollywood

British film critic David Thomson basically went NUTS on Hollywood this morning. The Editor of The Biographical Dictionary Of Film ripped apart almost every A-lister I can think of during an interview with The Daily Mail. Here is just a sample of what he had to say about today’s top celebs:
  • HUGH JACKMAN: He is hot (I suppose). Now, he just needs to be interesting.
  • KEIRA KNIGHTLEY: She is astonishingly beautiful. But Keira is about as interesting as a creme brulĂ©e where too much refrigeration has killed flavor with ice burn. She is still more credible as a faintly animated photographer’s model than as an actress.
  • BEN AFFLECK: On one hand I have always had a soft spot for Affleck. But my other view is that he is boring, complacent and criminally lucky to have got away with everything so far.
  • BRAD PITT: Hardly anything he touches now is less than ‘precious’ and ‘awesome’ — it can’t be long before he begins to look very tired.
  • HILARY SWANK: In nearly everything she has done, she has been pretty, dull, ordinary and incapable of lifting the film clear of a sanctimonious mud.
  • JENNIFER ANISTON: She’s in her 40s now and her £5 million-a-movie career cannot go on for much longer. But rather in the manner of Doris Day, while one can make gentle fun of Jennifer Aniston, it’s hard to dislike her.
  • DREW BARRYMORE: I can’t help finding it shocking, as well as startling, that Drew Barrymore was born so recently (in 1975), and yet seems to have been here, and a problem, for so long.
  • GEORGE CLOONEY: It’s clear, as he approaches 50, that George Clooney is the most liked actor in U.S. pictures. And it is also clear that he knows it.
  • MATT DAMON: What’s most interesting about Damon is the very lack of good looks — and the feeling of a squashed and rebuilt face.

Drew Barrymore Hosts a Party

Drew Barrymore looks better and better as the years go by. At least when she cleans up and dresses like a grown up. Here she is hosting a party for Nylon magazine. It was supposed to be a celebration of denim, though from the photos I've seen no one was actually wearing jeans. The event was attended by luminaries such as Peaches Gledof, Carmen Electra and Stephanie Pratt, so whatever. Back to Drew Barrymore, I love her retro look here, even if the hairstyle makes you wonder about the shape of her skull:

Drew Barrymore and Selma Blair: Strange Layers

I can't quite figure out the fashion sense that spawned Drew Barrymore and Selma Blair's outfits. Is it Pajamas Chic week in L.A.? Laundry-day-and-all-I've-got-is-80s leftovers? It's not that I've never left the house in my yoga pants, but there are ways to be comfy without looking like you just raided Britney Spears' closet.

Drew Goes Glam

This has been Drew Barrymore's week. She's promoting her TV film, Grey Gardens, and has chosen the most glamorous, old Hollywood looks. One may claim she's wearing costumes and not showing her own style, and it's possible, as Drew is not exactly Dita von Teese and has been photographed off duty in some ratty, grungy outfits. Still, considering the alternative- the pseudo-celebs and trashy looks we see photographed everywhere- I'll take Drew every time.

According to Just Jared the nude colored gown Drew wore for the Grey Gardens premier is an Alberta Ferretti. The black dress she had on for her Late Show appearance was a Giambattista Valli creation. I love the hair styles and especially the bold red lips. It makes me realize just how much I hated the beige lipsticks a-la J Lo.

There are endless options for red lipsticks from just about any brand you can think of. I'm very fond of the Noir Collection by Julie Hewett. It doesn't get more glam than that. Just remember the rules: exfoliate, moisturize, use a liner and make sure nothing gets on your teeth.

Blondes In Braids

It would be horribly unfair to even ask who pulls this hairstyle better, Drew Barrymore or Jessica Simpson. Poor Jess doesn't have a chance, especially with this dress (and I'm not sure bright orange is her best color). But it's worth taking a moment to look at the pictures, even if only to note that both Drew and Jessica sported this (more labor-intensive version of) milkmaid braids (and Drew looks lovely).

This style is utterly not my thing, but I always envied the girls who could pull it off. However, that was in junior high. I'm not sure how I feel about it nowadays.

Another One Bites The Dust

Justin and Drew are dunzo! Aw man, I was rooting for them! I even nicknamed them Drustin. Whatev, I guess they're still friends.

Drew's Charitable Heart

By the time yesterday's Oprah had ended, Drew Barrymore had not only expressed her feelings about her cutie of a boyfriend Justin Long, but more importantly, made the HUGE announcement that she was donating $1 million to the World Food Progamme.

Barrymore, a UN ambassador and the current Vogue cover girl, appeared on Monday's Oprah for a big give of her own during the themed show. After both her and Long were questioned about their blossoming romance by Winfrey, (we'll get to that a little later) Barrymore presented a check for $1 million dollars to the World Food Programme, which will help feed children in Africa. Barrymore, who has worked with the charity since 2005, has already made two trips to Kenya and seen for herself what a big impact she is making. "I have seen with my own eyes what a difference a simple cup of nutritious porridge can make in a child's life," the actress told Winfrey. "It helps them learn, stay healthy, and sets them on track for a bright future." Best friend Cameron Diaz even phoned in, expressing how proud she was of her donation, saying that she was "choked up."

Barrymore, like I mentioned before, also opened up about her and Long's relationship. Both "fresh" out of the shower after using the hotel shampoo, (Barrymore revealed after Winfrey asked why she smelled so good) Barrymore described Long as her best friend and the relationship as "healthy, productive, supportive and full of humor," also stating that they were having an "excellent time."

And what does Long have to say about his lady love?

"She smells good," Long told Winfrey. "She's beautiful," he said, "and funny. The most compassionate person I've ever met."

Definitely rooting for Drustin!

Drew named as UN ambassador

Drew Barrymore is following in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts as a U.N. ambassador. Barrymore has been named as an ambassador against hunger for the World Food Program after a recent trip to Kenya, where she toured WFP-supported school projects. "I can't think of any issue that is more important than working to see that no schoolchild in this world goes hungry," the Lucky You actress said in a statement. "Feeding a child at school is such a simple thing, but it works miracles. I've seen it with my own eyes." Barrymore was in Washington this week advocating legislation in Congress to increase funds for school meals from $100 million a year to close to $300 million a year over the next five years.

Drew Barrymore: CoverGirl

Drew Barrymore had been announced as CoverGirl's newest model and spokesperson. The Music and Lyrics actress will also be co-creating the ads she appears in, consulting on the concept, graphics, lighting, and photo cropping. "I leave the makeup and product up to them, that's their expertise," Barrymore says. "What I want to do is honor the tradition of CoverGirl but hopefully bring myself and my personality into it, as well as some edgy fashion-forward thinking and positivity to it... I like to be involved in every aspect. I'm a control freak but I keep those issues at bay when I work with other people." Barrymore said she jumped at the chance to try her hand at modelling. "What girl doesn't fantasize about it?" she said.
